What "gauge" means

Gauge is steel thickness — and the scale is backwards: a lower number is thicker. 12-gauge is heavier and stronger than 14-gauge. Thicker steel resists wind and load better and costs more.

Tube framing vs. red-iron

Galvanized tube (square tubing) is common on carports and smaller buildings — lighter, rust-resistant, and economical. Red-iron (welded I-beam rigid frame) is the commercial standard: it clear-spans wide, carries heavy loads, and is what larger shops, warehouses, and high-wind buildings use.

Which do you need?

For a small garage or carport in low-wind country, tube framing is often plenty. For a big clear-span shop, a commercial building, or anything on the high-wind coast, red-iron is usually the right — sometimes the only engineered — call. Your county's wind speed largely decides it.

Panel gauge matters too

Wall and roof panels come in gauges as well (commonly 26 or 29 for panels). Heavier panels dent less and hold up better to hail — worth it in Texas hail country.
